Pack THIS, Not THAT: Toiletries Edition

We all know that I am a huge fan of traveling carry on only, right? And, of course, with that comes the dreaded liquids rule.

What is the liquids rule? If you have been on a plane at all since 2001, you should know that you are only allowed to bring liquids under 3.4 ounces, in 1 one-quart bag.

This can be difficult, right? I mean, between your shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, makeup, dry shampoo, deodorant, and entire skincare routine… there is absolutely no way… right?

WRONG! Let me help you. Thats what I’m here for.

Introducing a new segment I’d like to call “Pack this, not that”, where I give you multiple examples of what to pack instead.

travel with solid shampoo by gemz haircare rather than liquid shampoo

Lets start with the obvious: your shampoo and conditioner. 3.4 ounce bottles of liquid haircare can take up a lot of space in your liquids bag. So this is why I only travel with Gemz Haircare, which is NOT A LIQUID! This shampoo and conditioner becomes liquid when mixed with water, and then you can use it like normal. For more info, check out my full review on YouTube here.

I LOVE that these can be packed in my luggage as opposed to my liquids bag. I have exclusively used these for travel since first trying them. I now have a 20% off code for you as well: TheKellys20.

travel with cadence capsules rather than the larger 3.4 oz silicone containers

I know a lot of you have been using refillable containers for your shampoo, conditioner, and body wash… but it’s time for you to know about the upgrade: Cadence capsules. These are customizable, magnetic capsules that hold 0.56oz. You can comfortably fit up to 15 Capsules in a quart-sized bag. You WILL be surprised when you see how much can fit in one capsule. The size difference between one capsule and one 3.4 oz container is incredible.

use baked foundation instead of liquid foundation to save space in your liquids bag.

As a professional makeup artist, and professional traveller, I am always trying to find non liquid makeup that gives me the same coverage that I desire with my liquid foundation. I have recently found that my baked foundation from Laura Geller is exactly that. I am obsessed. Add a travel size kabuki brush for applying, and you are all set.

travel with solid sunscreen instead of liquid sunscreen to save space in your liquids bag.

When it comes to sunscreen and packing a carry on, I do one of the following things: I either pack a solid sunscreen, or I buy a full size sunscreen when I arrive to my destination. The choice depends on the vacation, honestly. A 7 day cruise or beach trip in one location? I’ll buy the full size. Traveling around multiple places and need it minimally? Solid.

pack repel mosquito wipes instead of liquid bug spray for carry on only travel

If you’re traveling to a destination that required bug spray, these Repel Mosquito Wipes are the best thing ever. Not only does it leave you more room in your liquids bag, but they are very easy to use.

pack contact lens cases for skincare instead of travel size versions of skincare

Finally, I am sharing my little hack with you. I am totally a skincare girl, and love to bring as much of my daily and nightly routine with me as possible. They don’t always come in travel size, and if they do, the containers are way too big for what you actually need. We all know that every serum and lotion doesn’t require a ton of product. Therefore, I put them in contact cases. This is more than enough for a weeklong trip. Neglect your skin no longer!

Happy traveling!
