Hey readers! As you know, anytime I find luggage that blows me away, I have to feature it. Today’s feature is exactly that, and I’m proud to say that the inventor of this luggage is from my home state of Michigan!
Introducing… Take Off Luggage!
We’ve all flown budget airlines, right? Sometimes you can’t beat that $70 round trip flight to Florida on Spirit. But once you’ve selected your flights, then you have to select your luggage, and accept the fees… and that is where Spirit or Frontier airlines can get you.
A personal item is free on budget Airlines (and all airlines) but if you want to take a carry on with you, it can cost up to $80 EACH WAY on top of your flight cost. Suddenly, that cheap deal isn’t so cheap anymore. Why is the luggage fee more than the actual flight?
…What if I told you there was a piece of luggage that is the size of a carry on, so you can pack all of the items that you need, but then it converts into the size of a personal item… and therefore is FREE to fly with?
Enter Take Off Luggage.
This piece of luggage was invented as a Spirit and Frontier hack. The dimensions required on airlines always include the wheels and handles, so Stephen Davis invented a suitcase with removable wheels. Once the wheels are easily snapped off, the dimensions of the suitcase then become smaller, and therefore personal item size.
When the wheels are attached, Take Off luggage is 20” tall, 14” wide, and 8” deep. Once the wheels are taken off, the luggage becomes 18” tall, and therefore is the perfect size to fit in that dreaded luggage sizer at your gate.
Fun fact: the luggage weighs 5 pounds, so it will also be great when you fly budget airlines in other countries, where weight is often a factor.
Lets take a deeper look into the luggage, shall we?
The suitcase has a hard polycarbonate shell, which is a favorite lately among travelers, especially me. There are also corner bumpers on the top, to protect the shell where luggage is the most prone to cracks. There are vertical grooves on the outside that help keep it safe, and prevents it from scratches and dents.
There is a TSA lock on top that you can set yourself, a black zipper, and two easy grab handles on the top and the side.
Now lets look at the inside. We have a zippered side with a mesh pocket, and then the open side with the compression x- strap. These depths have plenty of room to fit your essential items, and many days worth of clothes.
I personally can fit 2 medium sized packing cubes in one side, which is more than enough for 2 weeks of clothes. I would put the packing cubes in the compression side. The other side can hold a pair of shoes, toiletries, and a handbag, and I would enclose them in the zippered side.
The most important thing that you have to remember about using this as a personal item is that: it is the ONLY BAG YOU CAN BRING. You cannot bring this and a purse. Or this and a backpack. If you want this suitcase to be free, and count as a personal item, this suitcase is it.
